The Society

The OEGS was founded in 1932 and exists to encourage male and female Old Eastbournians (OEs) and current and former parents and staff to play and enjoy the game of golf in the company of their fellow alumni and members of the Eastbournian Society.

Fixtures / Events and Golf Clubs

We enter teams for the prestigious Public School ‘scratch’ events of the Halford Hewitt, Grafton Morrish and Cyril Gray, all played on leading golf courses, and so we are always looking to increase our membership of low handicap players. There is a selection process for these events but this does not prevent an application to the Match Manager / Captain of the various scratch events.

We also have an impressive list of fixtures covering Open Meetings and School Matches against Allhallows, Brighton, Dover, Hurstpierpoint, King’s Canterbury, Lancing, Tonbridge and Uppingham, as well as the College students and the Common Room. We play a number of top-class courses in the South East of England, at greatly reduced green fee rates, including Walton Heath, West Sussex, West Surrey, Rye, Royal Ashdown, Royal Eastbourne, North Hants and Cooden Beach. There are around 20 fixtures per annum. In addition, we have an annual Spring weekend in North Norfolk, playing Royal West Norfolk, Hunstanton and Sheringham. We have also organised very successful tours to Cornwall in 2017 and to Devon and Somerset in 2020.

In 2022 we started a Singles Knockout Competition in memory of OEGS member, Richard Day, who sadly passed away in April 2021. Finally, we are planning to develop the youth section of the OEGS and have already introduced one new event and are looking to develop others.

Membership

We welcome new members and are always keen to have younger golfers, particularly those under 30 years old, join our friendly society. If you are interested in joining the OEGS, just apply here. After completing the Membership Application (see also Home page) you will receive Lapsed Member status. Please note that an annual subscription (£30.00 or £5.00 for members under 30 years old on 1st January of the year in question) needs to be paid before Current Member status is approved giving access to most of the website. Please go to the Annual Membership Process Guide (under the Members drop down menu) to find out the subscription rates and OEGS bank account details. You can do this as an approved Lapsed Member.

Applying to play in OEGS Events

As a Current Member you can apply to play in our various fixtures and events throughout the year. Log-in with your username and password, then from the drop down menu under the Fixtures heading select either School Matches, Scratch Events or Open Meetings, which will display the various events. Select the ones you would like to apply to play in, then confirm your handicap and click Apply. The appropriate Match Manager will contact you in due course.
