The 4th annual fixture against Uppingham was held on Tue 6th August at North Hants GC. The weather behaved producing a sunny afternnon with a blustery wind. The course was in fine shape having just hosted the English Men’s Amateur Championship and now boasting the new revised picturesque par 5 Hole #3 around a lake. A tasty 2-course lunch was held in the Justin Rose Room (no jackets/ties needed!).

Two teams of 7 played Matchplay (3 pairs and one singles) off HCP. Tony Dunn led off for OEGS in a singles against the opposing captain and led 3 up after nine but was pipped at the end after a fine fight back by Uppingham with some spectacular bunker play. Richard Gourlay and Peter Henley were next up losing 1 down against some excellent Uppingham putting even though Richard nearly sank a 70ft putt himself. Ian Henley and new OEGS member Robert Bolsom were our second pairing but were overcome by lower on-form HCPs of the opposition. Our final pairing of Colin Farrant and John Maclean had a terrific match, resulting in Uppingham halving the match with the last putt of the day. Jo Grey (off-games) managed the day and did his best to bribe and encourage his team around the course but the bribes appeared to be a tad under-whelming! Maybe should have been Euros instead of £s!
