OEGS v Eastbourne College Common Room – 1st June 2025
Two teams of eight assembled on a blustery day at the Royal Eastbourne Golf Club for the annual staff v OEGS match, teeing off on the dot at 2 pm under sunny skies but facing a ferocious headwind coming down the 1st, making it a tough opening even for the longest hitters.
2-handicapper Adrian Sharpin, teamed with the experienced and steady Patricia Seath, fought a battle with staff members Chris Howe and Alex Wingfield-Digby but emerged victorious by 1-up.
Match Manager Ian Henley and last year’s hole-in-oner Jay Lorton played against Ian Sands and Duncan Millar. The first nine was very close but a surge from Jay on the back nine (this time without a hole in one) meant that the OEGS won by a margin of 4&3.
Iryna Photiou and Tony Dunn for the OEGS faced a formidable pairing in hockey international Rob Hill and a young and powerful Fred Clarke. The OEs turned 3 up but the match went all the way to the 18th green where a half was good enough for a 1 up victory to Iryna and Tony.
The final OE pairing consisted of Jono Winchester and Rob Lee, Jono having played that morning at Cooden Beach vs. Jay Lorton following a late night at an OE reunion dinner. Despite this, they managed to beat Olly Marlow and Peter White by 2&1.
So a convincing 4-0 win for the OEGS team but the match was played, as always, in great spirit and friendship. The OEGS greatly values this match and extends its thanks to Ian Sands for so ably organising the arrangements with the club and to his team for being such good company. We look forward to the return next year.
