OEGS vs Lancing – 21st September 2023

Having not won the Lanbourne Bowl for a few years, OEGS captain, David Burt, was determined to change that losing run.

The venue for our annual match against Lancing was once again the picturesque course of West Surrey, which was in great condition, despite the fact that a number of bunkers were out of play due to heavy rain earlier in the week.

The first group out was David Burt and Ian Hamilton (Honorary OE), who came in as a last minute replacement. Ian is a member at Hunstanton GC and regularly joins us on our annual mini tour in North Norfolk. The opposition included Roger Pierce and Nick Lahey-Bean, two West Surrey members, who know the course well. The match was a very close affair, with the lead fluctuating a number of times, although neither side was more than two up at any stage. However, the turning point was a critical 4 foot putt on the 17th hole, which David Burt managed to sink, despite some friendly banter from the opposition. This resulted in the  OEGS pairing going one up and the last hole was halved.

In the second match Jeremy Miller and Ian Henley took on the Lancing captain, Charles Mackendrick and Danny Hewitt, another West Surrey member. Their captain played steady par golf, with the end result being a 4 & 3 win to Lancing.

With one win a piece, the final result went down to the final match. The pairing of David Dunn and Paul Wickman took on Lancing members, Lloyd and Longfield. The OEGS pair were 4 up by the 8th hole and held that lead to the end, finally winning 4 & 3.

So, with a 2 & 1 win, the trophy returns to the OEGS.
